Haiti: Electoral Process Expected to Be Complex

The issue of the electoral roll, as thousands of voters who were displaced by violence or simply left the country, has been raised.
On Tuesday, the director of Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council, Max Délice, predicted that the process of preparing for the elections will be complex, given the current situation in the Caribbean country.

“First of all, there is the issue of violence, and another element to take into account is that the electoral landscape has changed considerably, but we continue to work despite the difficult situation we are facing,” Délice said.
According to Délice, under optimal security conditions, the Provisional Electoral Council needs between 180 and 200 days to hold elections.
Furthermore, he also explained that they must prepare a timetable and resolve the issue of the small number of polling stations accessible because of the security crisis, not to mention the restrictions on the movement of people and the lack of equipment,

“This process will be short and will require rapid progress, and that will not be easy,” Délice stated.
He declined to say when the electoral machinery will be ready to carry out the general elections in the country.
“I cannot give a fixed date, our role is to present the data in terms of the electoral roll, operations and logistics,” he said.
